Late one night, Cole County Sheriff Greg White got a call that he was needed to help prepare for a S.W.A.T. raid to serve a search warrant, and he ran out the door. It was raining, his feet hit the wet porch and he sailed over the steps and slammed into the bottom landing. The next thing he knew he was lying in the gravel in tremendous pain, the muscles in the tops of both thighs torn from his kneecaps. 

He was taken to St. Mary’s Health Center, and his primary care physician phoned Dr. Jonathan Craighead, an orthopedic surgeon. "He came in, introduced himself, told me what would be happening with tests and surgery, and then prayed with me," White said. "I’m very picky about doctors, and I felt very good about him."

During surgery the next day, Dr. Craighead repaired the torn muscles. "I woke up in my room," White recalled, "and I was sitting up in bed pain free because of the quality of work they did in pain management. They used a constant drip into the nerves in my legs, as opposed to my mind being affected."

That enabled White to carry on with critical business from his hospital room. Over the next few days, he met with judges and his deputies to ensure no disruption in county law enforcement.

That early start on recovery, he said, enhanced his rehabilitation in the following weeks. "The doctors, nurses, social workers and physical therapist did a phenomenal job."
