St. Mary's Sleep Center is a nationally accredited sleep diagnostic center that includes eight bedrooms and a central control room, where tests are conducted nightly to diagnose adult and pediatric sleep disorders.

Quality sleep is essential for good health.  Conditions that disrupt sleep prevent its normal restorative function and cause a variety of symptoms.  Sleep disorders also are known to cause daytime sleepiness, fatigue, aggravate heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias and many other medical disorders including morning headache, mood changes, depression, impotence and hypertension.

Sleep apnea refers to periods of sleep where the individual temporarily stops breathing.  This is a serious disorder that left untreated can cause or aggravate other medical conditions such as hypertension, congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias.

Insomnia is a general description of sleeplessness or poor quality sleep.  It can refer to the inability to fall asleep, where the onset of sleep takes 30 minutes or more. It also can refer to waking up frequently during the night or waking up too early in the morning.

Narcolepsy is a condition of frequent and uncontrollable desire for sleep.  Sufferers of narcolepsy can fall asleep without warning as in while driving a car or during the performance of tasks requiring concentration and alertness.  Some narcolepsy patients awaken after daytime sleep unaware that they have fallen asleep.

Sleep Studies

St. Mary's Sleep Center offers patients complete and personalized care in a homelike environment.  While being tested, patients generally experience a normal night's sleep.  The only differences are that they are not sleeping in their own bed, sleeping patterns are being monitored and they are on their way to receiving therapeutic treatment.

The Sleep Center is equipped to perform Polysomnograms (sleep studies) in order to make accurate diagnosis of sleep disorders.  A sleep study monitors:

  • sleeping patterns (EEG)
  • breathing pattern
  • blood oxygen level
  • heart rate
  • body movements

Pediatric Sleep Disorders

As in adults, the accurate diagnosis of sleep disorders in children usually requires a sleep study.  St. Mary's Sleep Center is equipped to perform state of the art sleep studies in children to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, such as sleep-walking, nightmares or bedwetting.  A child-friendly atmosphere and trained professional staff make children and parents feel comfortable.  Parents are an important part of the team needed to accomplish a satisfactory sleep study of their child, that's why one parent is required to stay at the center during the entire testing.

Sleep Team

More than 10 dedicated and qualified staff at the Sleep Center are specially trained and registered in sleep disorders.  They are led by a physician who is board-certified in sleep medicine and pulmonary medicine.  Together, they place special emphasis on providing professional and personal care to every patient.

Physician Referral

If you're concerned that you or a family member has a sleeping disorder, please consult your personal physician, who will then evaluate your symptoms or refer you to a sleep specialist.  Your physician or sleep specialist will determine whether you would benefit from monitored sleep testing. Treatment may be as simple as a change in your sleeping position or may involve other interventions based on the diagnosis.
